SOMMERHAUSEN—June 04, 2010—The next iPhone Bootcamp is waiting for you at Kloster Eberbach, Germany, August 16-20, 2010.

Big Nerd Ranch Europe, premier provider of Cocoa and Cocoa touch developer training for the Mac, iPhone and iPad, has just added a new date for its popular iPhone Bootcamp near Frankfurt, Germany: August 16 - 20, 2010. The iPhone and iPad programming course is taught by Scott Ritchie and ideal for everyone new to iPhone and iPad development. With 20 years background in programming and teaching Objective-C and Cocoa (touch) Scott is one of the most experienced iPhone instructors on the market these days. The class is held at the historic former monastery "Kloster Eberbach", a location free of distraction.

One price covers five days of intensive iPhone and iPad training, lodging for five days, all meals, original instruction materials, 24-hour lab access, and transportation to and from the Frankfurt airport (FRA). Students signing up before July 12, 2010 apply for the early bird price and save Euro 200.

The five-day course requires no previous experience in coding in Objective-C or for the Mac or the iPhone/iPad, but students attending the bootcamp should be familiar with C or ideally another object-oriented language like Java or C++. The class is taught in English on the latest releases of Mac OS X, Xcode, and the iPhone SDK and addresses all devices, the iPhone, the iPod touch, and the iPad.

Students are encouraged to bring independent projects to class, allowing for input from classmates and individual instructor attention.

The primary text for the class is the new book "iPhone Programming. The Big Nerd Ranch Guide", by Aaron Hillegass, founder of the Big Nerd Ranch, Inc., and Joe Conway, released earlier this year. The guide is reflecting the teaching experience of four instructors and students feedback of more than two intensive years of iPhone training classes. After class, novice students will understand the integral components of Cocoa touch development and emerge fully skilled in the ability to develop complex applications for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Instructor Scott Ritchie focuses on the essential concepts, tools and design pattern, used throughout the frameworks, before moving on to more complex topics. Key topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Learning the Objective-C language used in all iPhone and iPad development
  • Mastering Memory Management
  • Using and understanding fundamental design pattern, like delegation, notification, key-value coding and observing
  • Dealing with multi-touch events, displaying text, and getting input from the keyboard
  • Using toolbars and view controllers to create applications with multiple views and split views on the iPad
  • Accessing telephony and web services, and accessing the camera function
  • Using the accelerometer, dealing with orientation, and using Core Location to determine user location
  • Drawing with Core Graphics, Quartz and OpenGL and making graphics move with Core Animation (CALayer)
  • Getting and creating contacts and events for contacts and the calendar
  • Using TableView to create custom table view cells and SQLite to store and retrieve data
  • Using Instruments to locate performance problems and memory leaks

Scott Ritchie has been developing with and teaching about Objective-C since he joined NeXT Computer in 1990 as a systems engineer and later lead developer trainer. Since 2000 he has held several training and engineering positions with Apple, most recently working with both AppKit and UIKit development.

This class has been taught at large companies like Cisco, AT+T, SAS, and other smaller companies.
